Old North State Winery

Located in Mt. Airy, North Carolina this is both a winery and brewery. You can sit at the wine bar and find your favorite wine, retreat to the comfortable couches to relax with friends or even take a tour of the vineyards. Old North State Winery also has a food menu, which offers all types of sandwiches and cheese and fruit trays.

Another point of interest in the city of Mt. Airy is the Andy Griffith museum, you know Andy from Mayberry? This is his hometown.

Wine

A great selection of wines and hand-crafted brew to boot!!!

The prices are reasonable here most bottles fall in the $10-12 price range. Also a few more expensive wines in the mid $20 dollar range.

The selection includes different choices in dry, semi-sweet, sweet and couple muscadine wines can also be found at Old North State Winery.

What are some of the favorites here? Here’s are a couple that you should consider during the wine tasting.

Restless Soul – this dry blended red wine is very popular with the natives. This is a fruity wine and at $12 a bottle a great deal.

Afternoon Delight – This is the most popular muscadine at the winery. And was a silver medal winner at the mid-Atlantic southeastern wine competition. Price per bottle only $10.

Tannat - This is a peppery wine. Not up everyone’s alley but if you like a black pepper and raspberry, you will at least wet to wet your palate with this wine during the wine tasting experience. Priced at $22 in 2013.

This North Carolina winery does have a wine club with many different benefits. One of the benefits is 15% off all wine purchases in the wine tasting room.

From what I know this winery has live music every Saturday not. Not sure of the other events offered here.

McRitchie Winery

This family owned winery is situated in the foothills of Blue Ridge Mountains and provides a looking glass to scenic views of this rugged mountain range. There’s definitely a lot of natural beauty around McRitchie Winery in Thurmond North Carolina.

McRitchie Winery and hard CiderA good group of wines to choose from and also a couple different and outstanding hard-ciders. This winery has won the North Carolina Winegrowers Cup both for its fine wines and outstanding ciders. Warm cider on a chilly fall day is always such a joy.

Wines and Ciders

The wines and ciders are reasonably priced $14 – 18, although they do carry some more expensive.

Three new wines are being introduced at the time of writing this, these are:  Foggy Mt Chardonnay, Pale Rider Dry Rose and Ring of Fire Red. The reception for these three new wines in the close knit Yadkin Valley Wine community has been extremely positive.

One other great wine at McRitchie’s is the Traminette. This is a dry one and this winery is one of the only North Carolina wineries that carries a dry version of this wine!!!

The most expensive wine here is a 2008 Petit Verdot Reserve and will cost you right around $25. They do have a wine club here, free to join and you will receive a 10% discount on wine by the bottle.

The hard-cider that can be found here comes in two varieties: semi sweet and dry. These are sparkling ciders.
