Childress Vineyards in Lexington, North Carolina is an excellent place to enjoy many different things. From the scenery the beautiful grounds the estate sits on to the delicious foods found on the Bistro’s menu. If Tuscany decor is your style, you will experience a little slice of heaven when inside this winery.

If you are in Lexington looking for place to enjoy a glass or two of wine the tasting room here is an excellent atmosphere to do so. There’s many different reasons to visit here.

The primary purpose of this post is to point out a few of the best red wines you need to try when visiting here. There are many to choose from and below we will give you our recommendations and opinions of those you must try if you are a red wine lover.

Childress Vineyards Red Wines

In total, you will find over 30 wines here, many varieties, whites, reds, desserts and what Childress calls their Classical, Reserve and Signature wines.

We may have missed a couple but to our knowledge there are at least 13 different red wines to choose from when visiting this Lexington North Carolina winery.

Here is a list of our favorites

Classic Red - If you can only try one, this is the one you need to taste. This is a blended red wine that’s aged in oak barrels making it very smooth. Upon first sip your palate will be presented with the flavor of cherries. But this fruity taste is not too sweet or overbearing to make you sick and provides a very clean finish.

Three Red - As the name hints, this is a blend of three different wines: Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec. Compared to the Classic Red mentioned above, Three Red is sweeter, heavier on the tannins and provides the flavor of raspberries.

2009 Syrah - This might not be the most popular varietal but if you are searching for a unique taste it’s definitely worth a try. This is a very intense and deep dark red wine. It has the same hints of raspberry as the Three Red mentioned above but a little less on the sweets.

Other Reds found at Childress

The three listed above our in our opinion are the best at this winery. Everyone has different tastes but we are confident you will find at least one of the three listed quite enjoyable. But you will not be limited to our top choices. Other red wines found here include:

  • Muscadine Red
  • 2008 Merlot
  • 2010 Sangiovese
  • 2009 Barbera
  • 2009 Reserve Syrah
  • 2009 Signature Merlot
  • 2010 Richard’s Red
  • 2009 Signature Meritage

Pinot Gris in Charlotte, NC

Where is the best place to find Pinot Gris in Charlotte, NC? This is one of my favorite white wine varieties so I should be of great assistance since I myself have spent many of days searching for this specific wine in Charlotte.

First, I will give you maybe some obvious options. Well, these first option may not be so obvious if you’re new to the city or new to wine in general. Then I will give you some options to finding wine that you maybe have never considered.

You can skip down to the lists but if you’re new to Charlotte or buying wine you should know this city is actually blessed with more than a few great places to purchase wine.  In many cities all you will find is a convenient store on the corner that carries wine or a big box grocery store that has a wine aisle. But Charlotte has many specialty wine stores and boutiques.

But I will not list all these places only my favorite two because these are all you need to visit when in Charlotte looking for wine. And both have a wide selection of different Pinot Gris.

Best Red Wine at Daveste Vineyards

Are you searching for a great red wine in North Carolina that pairs great with steaks or Italian and Mediterranean dishes? Daveste Vineyards, just north of Charlotte, has a great Cabernet Franc, if you goal is to have a great dinner this wine will become the feather in your hat if serving the style of dishes mentioned above.

This Cabernet Franc at Daveste Vineyards is handcrafted in small lots by the expert wine makers onsite and is an award winning wine. This is a medium bodied red wine with a long finish.  Aged in French Oak barrels with the optimal tannins and low in acidic content. For best performance, decant this wine and leave open  an hour before serving.

If you are experienced with red wines, you may have shied away from Cabernet Franc in the past, instead going for a nice Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot. If so, your not alone, the majority of red wine drinkers have done the same. This is a very misunderstood wine made from the Noble Grape, the parent grape of the Sauvignon and Merlot.

But in recent years the Cabernet Franc has started to become more and more understood and its popularity has began to climb. Its become very common with many red wine drinkers, that once they give the wine a chance it becomes one of their favorites.

Your First Cabernet Franc at Daveste Vineyards

If you are in a hurry, your best option to find a wine is at local supermarket or wine store. You can ask the clerk or the guy stocking the wine aisle. But hances are you probably will not get the best advice on wines at either of these places. So if you do have the time why not visit a nearby winery? To talk with the experts who actually make the wine. Daveste Vineyards located about 30 miles north of Charlotte is a great place to pick up a Cabernet Franc and other quality wines.

Wine Tasting Riesling at Westbend Vineyards

If you never plan to visit Westbend Vineyards in Lewisville, North Carolina but enjoy a good Riesling you may still learn a couple useful bits of information here to help make the best possible purchase of this wine type. But if you do plan to visit this North Carolina winery, I’m writing this to recommend adding this wine to your wine tasting.

The Riesling packaging must be right or I just say no.

For me to give any respect to a Riesling, for me to even consider tasting it, the packaging must be correct.

Any self respecting winery will package their Riesling correctly. What do I mean by correct packaging:

  1. Green
  2. Brown
  3. Cobalt Blue

The bottle must be one of these three colors. Use of these colored wine bottles for this wine is German tradition, the country the wine originated. Westbend Vineyards does package their Riesling correctly, in a taller, thinner cobalt blue bottle, a traditional bottle. Very pleasing to the eye.

I can’t tell you how many times I have seen this wine being sold in a plain old red wine bottle. If something as simple as the bottle type is incorrect then this should throw up red flags in your head about the quality of this German wine inside the bottle.

One compliant about the packaging, instead real cork, a plastic cork is used.

Not too dry, not too sweet

It’s crisp and clean and there’s plenty of fruit going on. The Rielsing at Westbend Vineyards is a very, very good summer white wine. A dry white wine with just a hint of sugar. A well balance acid and sugar profile. A dry mineral finish.

Different aromas and tastes but the two that most stand out is apple and honey. Some more subtle pineapple and floral hints.

This is a wine you will definitely want to drink cold, the colder the better.

A bottle of this wine can be picked up for around $16.

Wine and Spicy foods

Riesling wines have a very broad food pairing profile. However, many people have difficulty finding a wine that pairs well with spicy and ethnic foods. This German white wine goes great with Middle Eastern, Mexican, and Cajun cuisines.
